Dionna Griffin-Irons is the Director of Outreach & Diversity at the legendary comedy theatre, The Second City Chicago. I had the distinct honor of working with her at the very beginning of my career. I remember this cute little woman with this hearty laugh and sweet demeanor so when I heard her story I was shocked. Many people would look at Griffin-Ironsand think she's lived a very carefree, happy life. Beautiful, intelligent, educated, & creative...all the makings of a life bound for greatness. Well, don't judge a book by its cover because Dionna has seen her share of trials and tribulations (no pun intended). In her TedXUChicago video: How I Improvised in Prison and Found My Voice, she discusses her fall from grace and how she used a negative situation to empower herself and those around her. While serving a 2.5 year sentence in Federal Prison, Griffin-Irons was able to maintain her vision and find her voice. By using her improv training, she was able to empower her inmates to own their story, tell it without shame, and begin to rebuild their lives. Griffin-Irons now goes across the country empowering audiences to give themselves permission to use their life experiences in order to gain personal freedom.
