DateYourselfGirl Gives Back!!!
Last Christmas I had the pleasure to team up with some "Mommy Bloggers" for an online baby shower. We were charged with the responsibility to find an organization to give back to. Well, I had the opportunity to forge a wonderful relationship with Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless, now Hosea Helps, and its CEO Elisabeth Omilami. In my interview with her I discovered the thing homeless mothers were in desperate need of were diapers and formula. Who would've thought? All these years I had only thought of giving clothes and shoes and never once considered that mothers would be in need of diapers and formula. So I did some research and was astounded to find out that a box of 88 diapers, on average, would last a week. Man that's a lot of diapers to go through and at about $25 a pop it can get really expensive. Needless to say, I only got a few diapers and formula donated and when I arrived at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event I was simply ready to just hand the diapers over and go on about my business. BUT to my surprise as I was walking to the building I was bombarded by mothers asking if they could have the diapers. I mean I was shocked. What would my 10 little boxes really do? How could that impact the masses? On top of that, I came dressed up in a dress with stockings and high heels like I was going to a church service while everyone else was dressed ready to work and serve. In my defense, all I really knew about Dr. King Day was marches and community brunches. Where I'm from that's all the community really does is get dressed up to eat and give out awards or march. I'd never been involved in a Dr. King Day event that serviced the community on such a large scale. It was wholistic giving from clothes and shoes to providing meals to giving free hair services to free medical services being rendered. I was astonished by the number of volunteers that came to serve and really humbled by the number of people who really needed help. I was also humbled by the fact that the young lady who would be getting the diapers went into labor that day so the diapers couldn't have come at a better time. This opportunity made me want to do more so this year I opened up my own Target registry so I could get my family, friends, and followers to give along with me. I want to give more than 10 boxes of diapers...I want to give a million boxes of diapers. Ok, that's wishful thinking but as many diapers that I can give is my main focus. BUT I cannot do this without your help. I will be giving all gifts/dontations to Hosea Helps on Monday, January 18, 2016. I have already purchased my box of diapers and so have a few of my friends. This is a cause that is near and dear to my heart and Hosea Helps is an organiztion that has truly impacted my life in a positive way so please join me in making this years giving bigger and better.
